Listen to Ellie's story
Ellie’s story is one of extraordinary resilience. Admitted to hospital at just thirteen, she spent much of her teenage years in inpatient care, navigating a world where independence was restricted and trust had to be rebuilt from the ground up. For years, survival was not a choice - iit was simply something she had to do.
Over time, something began to shift. Through learning to trust others, Ellie slowly began to trust herself. She describes her resilience with quiet clarity:
“You can go through such hard times and still be okay - or find a path to being okay.”
A turning point in her healing came through animals. Once afraid of them, she gradually found comfort in their presence. A hamster became two guinea pigs, then more pets and with them, a sense of responsibility, purpose and unconditional connection.
“They are what gets me up on the hard days,” she explains. Caring for them meant caring for herself. Nurturing her pets became a way of nurturing love back into her own life.

Alongside this, creativity became both refuge and expression. Self-taught in crochet, photography and art, Ellie discovered that making something with her hands could quiet the noise in her mind. Through art therapy and creative practice, she found ways to communicate feelings that words could not always hold.
Today, Ellie’s guinea pigs - lovingly photographed and even crocheted - symbolise more than pets. They represent gentle strength, consistency, and the power of care. Through nurturing them, she has rebuilt her own sense of independence and identity.
Now studying animal care and volunteering within her community, Ellie hopes for what she beautifully calls “a little life” - not something grand or chaotic, but steady, meaningful and chosen.
Her story is not defined by hospital walls. It is defined by trust rebuilt, love nurtured, and creativity woven stitch by stitch into a life she continues to shape for herself.
